Have you been advised to get a dental crown shortly? Then, you may have some questions. What are same-day dental crowns? How are they different than traditional crowns? Drs. Don Mungcal and Alyssa Hanel of Brentwood Dental Care of Brentwood, California, educate patients on the benefits of same-day crowns vs. conventional crowns.
Drs.. Mungcal and Hanel describe the dental crown as a “cap” bonded over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its original shape, size, strength, and appearance. It covers the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gum line.
Traditional dental crowns are usually fabricated in a laboratory and require at least two separate appointments. In the first appointment, our dentist prepares your tooth by removing any areas of decay or damage and then takes an impression of your mouth. This impression is sent to a lab where technicians create a customized dental crown that matches your natural teeth in color and shape. The second appointment involves cementing the crown onto your tooth.
Same-day crowns are similar to traditional crowns but are made in a much shorter period using CEREC technology. CEREC is an acronym that stands for the phrase “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics” and is a computer-aided design and manufacturing digital system used to create same-day restorations, including crowns.
Getting a same-day crown starts with our dentist taking digital impressions of your mouth using a specialized camera. This eliminates the need for any messy traditional impressions. The images are then uploaded into the CEREC software, which fabricates a 3D model of your tooth and designs a custom-fitted crown. The design is then sent to an on-site milling machine, where the crown is milled out of a block of ceramic material within minutes.
