Most extractions are simple. These are ideal for teeth that are easily reachable in the mouth. The dentist wriggles the tooth in several motions to detach it from its ligaments. Once loose, the dentist pulls it out in one piece. 

Not all teeth play by the rules of simple extraction. Sometimes, they’re stuck beneath the gumline (impacted), broken at the surface, or growing in the wrong direction. Surgical extractions are typically needed when:

• Wisdom teeth are impacted or only partially erupted.
• A tooth has severe decay or damage below the gum line.
• A tooth is fractured or crumbled and can’t be gripped easily.
• The root is curved or long, making a simple extraction tricky.

For this procedure, the dentist will make a small incision in the gum to access the tooth. If it’s still embedded in bone, we’ll gently remove a tiny bit of bone to free it. Sometimes, the tooth is removed whole. Other times, it’s sectioned into smaller pieces to make removal easier and less invasive. Once the tooth is out, the area is cleaned and stitched to kick-start healing.

Dental extractions are surgical, so aftercare instructions are essential for a smooth recovery. Immediately after the procedure, we’ll place a gauze pad to manage bleeding and encourage clot formation. Bite on the pad and change it as needed until the bleeding stops. Pain and swelling peak in the first 48 hours, but pain medications, rest, and ice application will ease the discomfort. 

We’ll also give you easy-to-follow instructions on diet and oral hygiene. The objective is to prevent infections and encourage clot preservation to minimize a painful condition called a dry socket. Follow our aftercare instructions, and you’ll be back on your feet within a few days.
